La Roque Saint Cristophe

La Roque St. Christophe is a pre-historic troglodyte site dating from the Mousterian era (which is within the middle Paleolithic Era (Stone Age) which itself spans 120,000 to 35,000 years ago), which has been lived in by successive generations of man beginning with Neaderthals about 55,000 years ago. The site is one of the (if not the) largest naturally occurring shelters in Europe, at about a half a mile long. From its beginning (which sits about 300 feet above the Verzere River), it rises up 5 stories. The site itself was originally carved out by river water erosion at a time when the river ran much higher. During Medieval times, an entire village (with buildings and weapons) was built within the levels of the caves - the remains of some are still visible. Pretty cool standing on the same rock cliff as Neanderthals some 55,000 years ago!
